Rivian Automotive announced Wednesday that production of the R2 all-electric vehicle has begun at its manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois. The R2 is designed as a more accessible alternative to the flagship R1 SUV, aimed at broadening Rivian's market appeal and accelerating the company's path toward profitability. By lowering the entry price point, Rivian intends to scale production and reduce overall costs. The initial offering is a performance model priced at $58,000. This version features a 330-mile range, dual motors, and lifetime access to the Autonomy+ advanced driver-assistance system. While a more affordable entry-level model starting at $45,000 has been teased, Rivian noted that this version will not be available until late 2027.
