BMW Defies Industry Trend, Doubles Down on Luxury Sedans

BMW is resisting the industry-wide migration toward sport utility vehicles, reaffirming its commitment to the sedan market. Sebastian Mackensen, BMW's North America chief, stated that the company has no intention of abandoning sedans, viewing the current market exit of rivals as a strategic opportunity to capture remaining demand. The decision comes as several luxury competitors, including Audi, Lexus, and Volvo, have either discontinued or announced the end of their full-size sedan offerings in the US. This shift is driven by the overwhelming popularity of SUVs and the economic pressure of import costs. The updated 7 Series will serve as a technological showcase, integrating 'Neue Klasse' innovations originally designed for electric vehicles. These features include an AI-powered voice assistant, a panoramic heads-up display, and a rear-seat cinema experience featuring a 36-speaker array. Pricing for the 7 Series begins above $99,000, extending to $168,000 for the high-performance i7 M70 EV. However, the strategy faces significant headwinds from a 15% tariff on vehicles imported from Germany. In 2025, sales of the US-made X7 SUV nearly doubled the combined sales of the 7 Series and 8 Series sedans. While the business case for sedans is weaker than for SUVs, BMW views the 7 Series as a critical brand flagship that demonstrates its engineering and luxury capabilities.
