Trump Authorizes Lethal Force Against Mine-Layers in Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump has issued a direct order to the U.S. Navy to use lethal force against any vessel found laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement released via Truth Social, the President emphasized that there should be "no hesitation" in executing these orders to secure the vital maritime corridor. The move comes amid heightened tensions with Iran, where the shipping route has been severely restricted since the onset of conflict in late February. While a fragile ceasefire is technically in place, the U.S. has been aggressively pushing Tehran to fully restore normal traffic levels in the strait, which remains far below historical norms. To support the reopening of the waterway, the administration has ordered a threefold increase in minesweeping operations. Simultaneously, the U.S. has implemented a retaliatory naval blockade on Iranian ports to pressure Tehran into loosening its grip on the waterway. U.S. Central Command reported that 31 ships have already been diverted or returned to port as a result of these restrictive measures. The Strait of Hormuz serves as one of the world's most critical chokepoints for global oil supplies. The threat of direct military engagement and the existing blockade are expected to induce significant volatility in energy markets and increase the risk premium for global crude oil prices.
