OKX has integrated BitGo's off-exchange settlement platform to eliminate pre-funding requirements for US institutional clients. The move follows a significant investment from Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) as OKX expands its American footprint.

  • Integration of BitGo OES removes pre-funding requirements
  • Assets remain in BitGo cold custody during OKX trading
  • Strategic move follows ICE investment at $25 billion valuation
  • OKX US led by former Barclays director Roshan Robert
  • BitGo acknowledges inherent operational and cybersecurity risks

OKX is accelerating its expansion into the United States market by implementing an off-exchange settlement (OES) solution for institutional traders. Through a new integration with digital asset custodian BitGo, institutional clients can now execute trades on the OKX platform while maintaining their assets within BitGo’s cold storage. This strategic shift aims to enhance capital efficiency by removing the need for pre-funding, a common friction point for large-scale institutional entry into digital assets. The move aligns with a broader industry trend toward higher custody standards and the separation of exchange and custody functions to mitigate risk. The integration follows a major capital injection in early March, when Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) invested in OKX at a valuation of $25 billion. This partnership has seen ICE executives take seats on the OKX board, signaling a concerted effort to build a compliant and scalable US presence following the company's official re-entry into the US in April 2025. By lowering the barrier to entry for institutional capital, OKX is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the US professional trading market. However, the transition is not without risk; BitGo has previously noted in IPO filings that OES services remain subject to operational, regulatory, and counterparty risks, including potential cybersecurity incidents and reconciliation errors.
