DOJ Watchdog Launches Audit Into Epstein File Disclosure Compliance

The Department of Justice's internal watchdog has initiated an audit to determine if the agency is complying with federal law requiring the full disclosure of files related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The investigation by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) comes amid mounting complaints that the DOJ failed to meet the requirements of the Epstein Files Transparency Act. According to Deputy Inspector General William Blier, the primary objective of the audit is to evaluate the processes the DOJ uses for identifying, redacting, and releasing records in its possession. Blier indicated that the OIG may expand the scope of the investigation if circumstances warrant and will issue a public report upon the completion of the work. The transparency law was passed by Congress in November, following a period of controversy involving former Attorney General Pam Bondi. Bondi had reportedly reneged on a previous promise to release the DOJ's investigatory file on Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019. The handling of these documents has led to significant political fallout. President Donald Trump fired Bondi on April 2, a move reportedly driven by dissatisfaction with how the Attorney General managed the release of the Epstein files. The OIG's findings are expected to clarify whether the department intentionally obstructed the transparency mandated by law.
