Europe's LNG Imports Face First Annual Decline Since 2025

Europe is experiencing a contraction in its seaborne natural gas supply, marking the first year-on-year monthly decline since the beginning of 2025. Ship tracking data indicates that fewer liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers have arrived at European ports throughout April compared to the same period last year. This shift comes as the region continues to navigate its energy transition and reliance on global imports. According to estimates from data intelligence firm Kpler, full-month import volumes are expected to be approximately 3% lower than in April 2025. The gap between current arrivals and last year's levels has continued to widen as the month progresses. Analysts attribute the decline to a combination of scheduled maintenance works at receiving terminals and a general tightening of global LNG flows. While the percentage drop is relatively modest, it highlights the ongoing sensitivity of Europe's energy infrastructure to operational disruptions and the volatility of the global spot market. From a market perspective, any reduction in supply during a period of tightening global flows typically provides upward pressure on regional gas benchmarks, though the impact of a 3% dip may be absorbed by existing storage levels.
