Trump Threatens UK with Tariffs Over Digital Services Tax

President Donald Trump has issued a direct warning to the United Kingdom, threatening to impose significant tariffs unless the British government eliminates its Digital Services Tax (DST) targeting U.S. technology firms. The DST, implemented in 2020, imposes a 2% tax on the revenues of online marketplaces, search engines, and social media platforms that derive value from UK-based users. Major U.S. corporations, including Apple, Meta, and Alphabet's Google, are primary targets of the levy. Speaking from the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump criticized the tax as an attempt to make an "easy buck" at the expense of American companies. While he did not specify the exact scale of the proposed tariffs, he emphasized that the U.S. could easily retaliate to force the removal of the tax. The UK's Labor government has defended the measure as a vital fiscal tool. In the 2024-2025 financial year, the DST generated approximately £800 million ($1.08 billion) in revenue. Although a trade deal reached last May left the tax unchanged, Trump has recently suggested that the terms of such agreements are subject to change. These threats emerge amid strained relations between Trump and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The timing is particularly sensitive, as King Charles III and Queen Camilla are scheduled to arrive in the U.S. on Monday for a four-day state visit, including a meeting with the President at the White House.
