Instacart Co-Founder Debuts AI-Centric Hedge Fund Abundance

Apoorva Mehta, the co-founder of Instacart, has entered the hedge fund space with the launch of Abundance, a firm designed to replace traditional human portfolio management with an army of artificial intelligence agents. Unlike traditional quantitative funds that rely on static algorithms, Abundance employs thousands of autonomous bots that scour the internet for trade ideas and conduct deep-dive research. This approach aims to automate the fundamental analysis process, allowing AI to independently identify long and short positions, size bets, and execute trades. The 39-year-old Mehta established the firm last year. The operational core of Abundance consists of a specialized team of quantitative researchers, engineers, and AI experts focused on the development and maintenance of the underlying models. The launch highlights a growing trend of integrating generative AI into the buy-side of finance. While many traditional funds use AI for data processing or sentiment analysis, Abundance's model of replacing the fundamental manager represents a more aggressive shift toward full automation in asset management.
