Coinbase Executive Outlines Future of 'Agentic Payments' via x402 Protocol

Coinbase's Jesse Pollak has identified AI agents as the primary catalyst for the next evolution of cryptocurrency payments. According to Pollak, the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems has created an immediate need for "money as software," allowing agents to transact and settle payments without human intervention. This shift toward "agentic payments" enables AI to autonomously purchase compute power, data access, and travel bookings. To facilitate this, Coinbase and partners including Google, Microsoft, and Mastercard are developing x402, an open-source protocol designed for on-demand API payments that bypasses traditional subscription models and legacy banking rails. Utilizing smart contracts, the x402 protocol allows agents to move funds globally and instantly. Early adoption data indicates that approximately $48 million in payment volume has already flowed through the system, with 95% of that activity occurring on Base, the Coinbase-incubated Ethereum layer-2 network. Pollak envisions a future open marketplace where AI agents can discover and utilize digital services programmatically. He suggests that the path to mass crypto adoption lies in "invisibility," where users experience the efficiency of blockchain technology without needing to interact with the underlying complexity of the infrastructure.
