  • Suspect Cole Allen arrested after gunfire at the Washington Hilton
  • Trump administration officials safely evacuated from the venue
  • Investigation reveals suspect traveled from California via train
  • Suspect's letter cited security lapses at the event
  • Congress to hold oversight hearings on Secret Service protocols

The annual White House Correspondents' Dinner was disrupted Saturday night when a suspect, identified as Cole Allen, breached a security checkpoint and engaged in a shootout with law enforcement. The suspect was apprehended at the scene and is scheduled for arraignment on Monday. While one law enforcement agent sustained non-life-threatening injuries, all administration officials and lawmakers were safely evacuated, and no attendees were injured. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated that preliminary investigations suggest Allen was specifically targeting members of the administration. Allen, a resident of Torrance, California, reportedly traveled by train from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. and had checked into the Washington Hilton on Friday. Authorities noted that the suspect is currently not cooperating with the investigation. Allen's background includes a degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and a master's in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills. He was previously employed as a teacher at C2 Education, which has since distanced itself from the suspect's actions. According to a letter obtained by the New York Post, Allen referred to himself as a 'friendly federal assassin' and expressed hostility toward the President. The letter also highlighted perceived weaknesses in the security protocols at the venue, a sentiment echoed by several attendees. This incident marks the third attempt on President Trump's life since 2024. In response, the U.S. Secret Service is coordinating with Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley to hold bipartisan oversight hearings on Capitol Hill to review security protocols and law enforcement failures surrounding the event.
