Short term

The UK benchmark index saw marginal gains on Monday as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of critical policy meetings. Sentiment was bolstered by potential diplomatic progress between the U.S. and Iran.

  • FTSE 100 marginally up to 10,396.43
  • BoE expected to hold rates amid inflation and growth concerns
  • AstraZeneca receives FDA approval for Saphnelo autoinjector
  • Entain drops 6.5% on Eminence Capital closure
  • Market focus shifts to Fed, ECB, and BoJ statements

The FTSE 100 recovered from early morning losses to trade slightly higher at noon, closing the first half of the day up 17.35 points, or 0.17%, to reach 10,396.43. Market participants are currently in a holding pattern, awaiting monetary policy decisions from a quartet of major central banks this week, including the Bank of England, the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, and the Bank of Japan. The Bank of England is widely expected to maintain current interest rates as policymakers balance the pressure of Gulf-driven inflation against broader economic growth risks. Beyond monetary policy, slight optimism regarding a fresh round of peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran provided a modest lift to overall sentiment. Corporate performance was mixed across the index. AstraZeneca saw gains following FDA approval for its Saphnelo once-weekly autoinjector for adults with systemic lupus erythematosus. Other notable gainers included Rolls-Royce Holdings, Burberry Group, and Halma, all seeing increases between 1.3% and 2%. On the downside, Entain shares plummeted 6.5% following news that major shareholder Eminence Capital is being shuttered. Hedge fund veteran Ricky Sandler is reportedly returning investor cash after a 27-year run, citing insufficient performance in recent years. Additionally, Sainsbury's drifted down 2.7%, while BT Group and British American Tobacco saw declines of 1% to 2%.
