Vietnam Shifts LPG Sourcing to US Amid Middle East Conflict

PetroVietnam Gas JSC is aggressively restructuring its energy procurement strategy, prioritizing US-sourced liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) over traditional Middle Eastern suppliers. This pivot comes as the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran fundamentally alters global energy logistics and threatens regional stability. The state-owned gas major is responding to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments. The disruption has forced Asian importers to seek alternative sources to maintain domestic energy security and ensure the availability of cooking fuels. Quantitative data reveals a rapid transition in sourcing. For May, PV GAS plans to import 66,000 tons of LPG from the US, significantly outpacing the 44,000 tons expected from Middle Eastern sources. This follows a sharp increase in April, where the company imported 76,000 tons from the US—a massive surge compared to just 2,200 tons in March, which marked the firm's initial entry into the US market. The shift underscores a broader trend of energy re-routing as geopolitical instability renders traditional routes untenable. Market participants expect continued volatility in LPG pricing and shipping costs as Asian markets decouple from Iranian supply and increase reliance on Western exports.
