GAO to Probe DOJ Over Epstein File Transparency Compliance

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is initiating a formal probe into the Department of Justice's management of documents related to the late Jeffrey Epstein. The investigation follows a request from a bipartisan group of senators, including Jeff Merkley, Lisa Murkowski, Ben Ray Luján, and Dick Durbin, who seek to determine if the agency disregarded legal mandates. The probe centers on the Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed by President Donald Trump in November, which required the full release of relevant documents by December 19, 2025. Senators allege that the DOJ failed to comply with the law's directive to protect victims, instead using heavy redactions to shield the names of influential business leaders and elected officials. Critics argue that the DOJ's handling of the files has been inconsistent, with claims that mentions of President Trump may have been omitted while personal information of alleged victims was disclosed. This perceived lack of transparency has led to significant criticism from both the public and members of Congress. The political fallout has already resulted in leadership changes, including the April 2 dismissal of Attorney General Pam Bondi, who faced scrutiny over her management of the Epstein episode. In addition to the GAO's external review, the DOJ's own internal watchdog has announced a separate audit to evaluate the agency's compliance with the transparency legislation.
