Bitcoin Positioned as Primary Anchor Amid Altcoin Volatility

Investors are increasingly pivoting toward Bitcoin as the primary asset in digital portfolios to avoid the high failure rates associated with altcoins. While the crypto sector is often viewed as a space for diversification, data suggests that picking winners among smaller tokens is an unreliable strategy. According to research from CoinGecko, more than 53% of all crypto tokens launched since 2021 have become completely defunct. This trend extends beyond meme coins and scams; the median new token launched in 2025 experienced a price decline of more than 70% from its initial debut. In contrast, Bitcoin has demonstrated a unique ability to survive significant drawdowns and reach new highs. Over the past decade, Bitcoin has maintained a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 84%, significantly outperforming both gold and traditional index funds. While some investment strategists at major banks caution that these historic returns are unlikely to repeat, they project more modest annualized gains of 3% to 10% over the next decade. Even at these lower estimates, the expected return remains superior to the projected zero return of most altcoins. Given these risk profiles, analysts suggest that Bitcoin should serve as the core position of a crypto portfolio, potentially accounting for as much as 85% of the digital asset allocation. This approach prioritizes capital preservation and long-term viability over speculative gambling on alternative tokens.
