Genting's Resorts World Launches First Full-Scale Casino in New York City

Resorts World New York City, owned by Malaysia-based Genting, has opened its doors to gamblers, introducing live table games including blackjack, baccarat, craps, and roulette to the city. The opening follows the company's acquisition of one of three coveted casino licenses awarded by the state's gambling commission in 2025. The project is the culmination of a process that began with a 2013 voter referendum. Resorts World gained a first-mover advantage due to its existing slots and electronic gambling operations near the Aqueduct Racetrack. The expansion has already generated 1,200 new jobs, with an additional 500 hires expected by summer. Currently, the casino operates under a temporary monopoly, paying high state taxes of 63% on slots revenue and 30% on table games. These rates are slated to decrease once competitors enter the market. Other planned developments include a Bally's casino in the Bronx and a Hard Rock project near Citi Field. The economic scale of the expansion is substantial. State officials estimate the three licensed casinos could generate $7 billion in tax revenue over ten years. Furthermore, CBRE projections suggest annual gaming revenues could reach $5.6 billion under a bull case scenario.
