RIVN, LCID
Long term

Rivian and Lucid are increasingly focusing on the high-margin autonomous vehicle market to offset heavy losses in the EV sector. While both face significant cash burn, strategic partnerships with Uber and others provide a potential path to recovery.

  • Global EV market projected to reach $2 trillion by 2032
  • AV market potential estimated at $41 trillion by 2034
  • Rivian software gross profit surged to $576 million in 2025
  • Uber investing $1.2 billion in Rivian and $500 million in Lucid
  • Rivian delivered over 42,000 vehicles in 2025, significantly outpacing Lucid
  • Lucid supported by Saudi PIF with a 100,000 vehicle purchase agreement

Rivian Automotive and Lucid Group are shifting their strategic focus toward autonomous vehicles (AV) and robotaxis as the broader electric vehicle market evolves. With the global EV market projected to grow from $892 billion in 2025 to over $2 trillion by 2032, both companies are eyeing the even larger AV opportunity, which is estimated to be worth $41 trillion by 2034. Both manufacturers have seen their stock prices plummet between 83% and 98% over the last five years, driven by heavy losses and significant cash burn. To counter this, they are leveraging AI and software to create higher-margin revenue streams that move beyond simple hardware sales. Rivian has demonstrated rapid growth in its software and services segment, with gross profits jumping from $7 million in 2024 to $576 million in 2025. The company's strategy is bolstered by a joint venture with Volkswagen and a conditional $1.2 billion investment from Uber. Rivian also maintains a vertical integration strategy by developing its own chips to reduce reliance on third parties. Lucid is similarly pursuing the AV space, supported by a $500 million investment from Uber and a commitment for the ride-hailing giant to purchase 35,000 vehicles. Additionally, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund has a purchase agreement for up to 100,000 vehicles over a decade. Lucid utilizes Nvidia for its hardware and SoundHoundAI for its voice assistant. While Rivian currently leads in scale—delivering over 42,000 vehicles in 2025 compared to Lucid's sub-16,000—both remain speculative investments. The transition from hardware-centric manufacturing to software-driven autonomy will be the primary determinant of their long-term viability.
