The global semiconductor industry is facing a new vulnerability as the conflict in the Middle East disrupts the supply of essential chemical inputs. While energy markets and fertilizer inputs have dominated the headlines, the scarcity of propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (PGMEA) is beginning to surface as a critical bottleneck for manufacturers. PGMEA, often referred to as photoresist, is a specialized paint based on the oil derivative naphtha. It is indispensable for the photolithography process used to etch intricate circuits onto silicon wafers. The instability in the region and disruptions near the Strait have made this niche but vital commodity increasingly difficult to source over the last two months. For the past eight weeks, the conflict involving Iran has primarily impacted visible commodities like crude oil. However, the interdependence of the petrochemical supply chain means that disruptions in naphtha derivatives quickly translate into shortages for high-tech manufacturing processes. If the shortage persists, semiconductor manufacturers may face production delays or increased input costs. This adds a layer of geopolitical risk to an industry already attempting to diversify its supply chains away from volatile regions, potentially impacting the delivery of everything from consumer electronics to industrial hardware.
