Former FBI Director James Comey appeared in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday, following a two-count indictment alleging he threatened President Donald Trump. The charges center on an Instagram post from last May featuring seashells arranged to form the numbers '86 47' on a North Carolina beach. The Department of Justice and President Trump contend that the numbers represent a threat to assassinate the 47th president, noting that '86' is slang for removing or ejecting a person. Comey has denied these allegations, stating the image was intended as a political message and was removed shortly after it was posted. The hearing lasted approximately seven minutes, and Comey did not enter a plea. The case will be prosecuted in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the investigation into the post had been ongoing for nearly a year, though the indictment remains sparse on specific evidence beyond the photograph. This marks the second indictment against Comey in less than a year. A previous indictment, which accused Comey of lying to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2020, was dismissed in November after a judge ruled that the appointing U.S. Attorney had not been validly appointed. Comey has expressed continued faith in the independent federal judiciary as the legal proceedings continue.
