X's new snooze feature reveals that cryptocurrency has become the most muted topic on the platform. The trend highlights a growing disconnect between the crypto community and retail users amid a surge in AI-generated content.

  • Crypto surpasses politics and business as the most muted topic on X
  • AI-generated 'slop' and InfoFi apps identified as primary drivers of user fatigue
  • CryptoQuant founder blames X's inadequate bot detection for the decline
  • Fear & Greed Index remains in 'Fear' territory at 29
  • Google Trends indicate a downward trajectory for crypto search interest since early 2026
  • X introduces Smart Cashtags to integrate real-time financial data

Cryptocurrency has officially become the most muted topic on X, surpassing politics, sports, and business. This revelation comes from Nikita Bier, X's head of product, following the April 22 launch of the 'snooze' feature, which allows Premium subscribers to hide specific topics from their feeds for 24 hours. The decline in visibility is largely attributed to 'AI slop'—a flood of low-quality, AI-generated content—and 'InfoFi' apps that incentivize engagement through payments. X previously modified its API policies in January to combat these bot-driven networks, but the issue continues to plague user feeds. Internal views on the cause differ. While Bier suggests the visibility problem is self-inflicted due to overposting and low-value engagement, such as repetitive greetings, industry leaders disagree. Ki Young Ju, founder of CryptoQuant, argues that the platform's failure to improve bot detection is the primary culprit, suggesting the algorithm cannot distinguish between legitimate accounts and spam. This social media trend aligns with broader market anxiety. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index currently sits at 29, indicating a state of 'Fear.' Furthermore, Google Trends data shows a sharp decline in global search interest for 'Bitcoin' and 'cryptocurrency' since the start of 2026. Despite the muting trend, X continues to integrate financial tools. On April 15, the platform rolled out Smart Cashtags for iPhone users in the US and Canada, providing real-time price charts for assets including Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, and stocks like Coinbase and MicroStrategy.
