The United States has removed tariffs and restrictions on whisky imports from the United Kingdom, a move announced by President Donald Trump following a state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The decision effectively restores a zero-tariff trade environment for spirits between the US and the UK, mending transatlantic trade relations. The repeal addresses tensions stemming from the administration's 'liberation day' tariffs, which had imposed a 10% blanket duty on UK goods. This policy had disrupted the long-standing trade relationship between Scotland's whisky distillers and Kentucky's bourbon producers, particularly regarding the critical exchange of wooden barrels used in aging. The economic impact is substantial for Scotland, where whisky represented 23% of all goods exports in 2025 and supports approximately 40,000 jobs. According to the Scotch Whisky Association, the tariffs were costing members roughly £4 million ($5.44 million) per week in lost exports.
