Millennial Retirement Savings Lag Behind Older Cohorts, Fidelity Data Shows

New data from Fidelity reveals a stark disparity in retirement readiness across generations, with millennials trailing significantly behind their predecessors in 401(k) accumulation. As the oldest millennials enter their mid-40s, the current average account balance suggests many are not on track to meet traditional retirement benchmarks. According to the research, the average 401(k) balance for millennials totaled $80,700 in the third quarter of 2025. This figure is substantially lower than that of Gen X, who hold an average balance of $217,500, and Baby Boomers, who maintain a median balance of $267,900. Meanwhile, Gen Z is in the early stages of accumulation with an average balance of $17,000. Financial analysts note that a nest egg of approximately ten times a worker's final salary is typically required to maintain a standard of living in retirement. For millennials currently averaging $80,000, achieving this target may prove difficult without a significant increase in savings rates. This trend highlights a potential long-term socio-economic challenge, as a large segment of the workforce may find Social Security benefits insufficient to support them. Experts recommend automating investments, increasing income, and reducing non-essential spending to bridge the gap and ensure long-term financial security.
