Short term

Vanguard will lower the nominal share prices of five U.S.-listed ETFs to under $100 to improve retail accessibility. The move aims to narrow bid-ask spreads and increase trading volume for these high-performing funds.

  • Combined assets of $724 billion affected by splits
  • Share prices reduced from $290-$713 to under $100
  • Splits effective after April 20 close
  • Aims to improve liquidity and retail access
  • Vanguard IT ETF saw 1,360% growth since 2004

Vanguard has announced forward stock splits for five of its U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), representing a combined $724 billion in net assets. The splits are scheduled to take effect after the close of trading on April 20. The decision comes as a response to the significant price appreciation of these funds over time. By reducing the nominal share price from the current range of $290 to $713 to below $100, Vanguard intends to make these vehicles more accessible to retail investors who cannot utilize fractional share trading through their brokers. Among the affected funds is the Vanguard Information Technology ETF, which has seen a rally of approximately 1,360% since its inception in January 2004. Similarly, the Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF has gained 488% over the same period. These strong performance tracks have driven the nominal prices to levels that the issuer now seeks to normalize. Beyond accessibility, the splits are expected to tighten the bid-ask spreads, which have widened as the funds' prices ascended. This technical adjustment should provide retail traders with more efficient entry and exit points and potentially drive higher trading volumes. This trend follows other high-profile corporate actions in the broader market, such as Booking Holdings' recent 25-for-1 split, which reduced its share price from roughly $4,200 to approximately $168.
