Amazon to Terminate Store Access for Legacy Kindle Devices

Amazon has announced it will discontinue store access for Kindle e-readers and first-generation Kindle Fire tablets released in 2012 or earlier. Effective May 20, 2026, users of these legacy devices will no longer be able to purchase, download, or borrow new e-books from the Kindle Store. The company cited security requirements and hardware limitations as the primary drivers for the decision, noting that some of the affected devices have been supported for up to 18 years. While the devices will lose connectivity to the store, Amazon confirmed that users will retain access to all previously downloaded content, effectively turning the devices into offline readers. To mitigate user frustration and encourage migration to current hardware, Amazon is providing discounts to customers upgrading to newer Kindle models. However, the move has drawn criticism from long-term users who argue that the hardware remains functional for basic reading tasks. Environmental advocates have also raised concerns regarding the sustainability of the decision. Estimates suggest that up to 2 million devices could become obsolete due to the software cutoff, contributing to the growing global issue of electronic waste. From a market perspective, the move is a standard lifecycle management strategy. While it may cause short-term brand friction among a small subset of loyalists, it reduces the technical debt associated with maintaining legacy software compatibility.
