Alaska Airlines Hikes Baggage Fees Amid Fuel Price Volatility

Alaska Airlines has announced a price increase for checked baggage, effective for all tickets booked on or after April 10, 2026. The new fee structure applies to flights operated by both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines throughout North America. The decision comes as the airline grapples with significant volatility in jet fuel prices, fueled by ongoing geopolitical turmoil related to the conflict in Iran. This shift mirrors a wider trend among major U.S. carriers seeking to pass increased operating expenses directly to consumers. Under the new pricing, the first checked bag will now cost $45, representing a $5 increase. The second bag will rise by $10 to $55, while the fee for a third checked bag will jump significantly from $150 to $200. Jet fuel markets have experienced sharp swings recently, with prices peaking above $119 per barrel before retreating to $95 during a brief ceasefire, only to climb back toward the $100 mark as uncertainty lingers. Other industry leaders, including Delta, United, American, Southwest, and JetBlue, have implemented similar fee hikes or transitioned to 'pay-for-what-you-use' models. These adjustments are designed to protect margins against unpredictable energy costs and an uncertain global environment.
