Geopolitical Conflict in Iran Disrupts Global Mining Supply Chains

The global mining sector is experiencing mounting pressure as the conflict in Iran triggers widespread disruptions across international supply chains. The instability is impacting the availability of essential inputs, leading to increased operational costs for the extraction and processing of high-demand metals. These crises are manifesting in diverse mining hubs, including Western Australia, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The primary bottlenecks are centered on energy and chemical inputs, which are critical for both the movement of materials and the refining process. Diesel, the primary fuel powering heavy machinery at mine sites, has emerged as a critical pain point. Simultaneously, the supply of sulfur—a vital component used in the processing of approximately one-sixth of the world's copper—is tightening significantly. These constraints are expected to drive up the cost of production for base and precious metals.
